音楽の第5の要素としての「空間」がオーディオ制作にもたらす変革についての研究レポート
8月例会は、作曲家のJulius Dobos（ジュリアス・ドボス）氏をお迎えして、これまでにサンフランシスコ、ロサンゼルス、ニューヨークにて開催された業界向けイベントに続き、「空間を作曲に取り入れる実践方法についての考察、その成果と意義について」のご講演頂きます。またAES 2025で発表された研究成果もご紹介いただき、同氏による空間作曲による作品のデモンストレーションも合わせて行います。
特にジュリアス・ドボス氏からは学生の皆さまの参加を要望されておりますので、皆さまのご参加をお待ちしております。

“Spatial Composition: The New Frontier”
Space as the 5th Element of Music and its Consequences on Audio Production
Join AES Japan and music industry colleagues as we explore SPACE as a compositional element – and its effects on the audio production pipeline. Composer and expert synthesist Julius Dobos has been invited to present his spatial composition research to AES, the Recording Academy, Dolby Labs HQ and at select universities. Following industry-exclusive events in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York, Mr. Dobos is now visiting Tokyo to talk about the practices, outcomes and consequences of using space in music composition, and to demonstrate the consequential findings of his research (AES, 2025) via spatially composed works.
[Background of the Theme]
Composers have been using melody and rhythm for thousands of years, harmony for centuries. Musique concrète expanded the use of timbre 75 years ago. Are we at the verge of another musical disruption? What if, using space as an equally fundamental parameter in synthesis and composition, composers, synthesists, songwriters and producers not only mixed but composed music in immersive systems? Can SPACE become the 5th element of music? How does the conceptual use of spatial location and movement effect the perceived meaning? And, how will such new approach to composition effect the music production pipeline and the role of the audio engineer?
These are some of the questions that Mr. Dobos’ research explores via a spatio-emotive experiment, spatial synthesis, parallel stereo/spatial composition process, comparative stereo/spatial analysis, focus groups and thousands of data points. Audio engineers, producers, composers, songwriters and music creators of all disciplines are encouraged to join to hear the findings and experience demonstrations of new, spatially-composed music.

[Speaker] Mr. Julius Dobos
Julius Dobos is an award-winning, platinum-album European-American composer, sound synthesist, music director and mastering engineer. He is best known for his 11 electronic and electro-orchestral albums, music produced for film, television, installations, theme music for major events and international brands. His composition credits span over 30 years and include the original score for the English version of Dragon Ball Z series, NCIS, music produced for You Don’t Mess with the Zohan, Paul Blart: Mall Cop, The Zookeeper, collaboration with Grammy®-awarded artists Martha Sebestyen, Erykah Badu, and a colorful list of commissioned works, including spatially-composed music.
For his forgotten future project-series, Mr. Dobos crafts organic electronic music with a distinct style and sonic character. His live performances and immersive soundscapes have attracted audiences worldwide. His Los Angeles Human Intelligence Control show featured a novel musical experience through digitally-tracked interaction with the audience.
Mr. Dobos lives in California where he is Distinguished Professor at the University of Silicon Valley. He is also a published author and speaker on electronic music and production culture, a BMI and Artisjus writer, an avid music technology beta-tester and industry advisor, also the former Vice Chair of AES San Francisco.
